Savino, Lauren M. age 18 of New Milford died Thursday, December 11, 2008. Beloved daughter of Sheri and Stephen Savino. Dearest sister of Sara. Loving granddaughter of Gloria Savino, the late Arleen Ambrosio, and Lou Ambrosio and his wife Diane. Dear niece of Sandy and Bruce Laga, Mike and Sue Ambrosio, and Chris and Cathy Ambrosio. Lauren’s memory will always be cherished by her loving cousins, family members and friends. Lauren was a student at New Milford High School and spent many days playing softball and volleyball. When she was a little girl, Lauren was also active with the Girl Scouts. Funeral service Tuesday, 9AM from the Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck. Then to Church of the Ascension RC Church for a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial. Family and friends are invited to visit Monday 2-4 & 7-9PM. In lieu of flowers donations in her name to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund, 30 Prospect Ave., Hackensack, NJ 07601.

Vibrant. Sassy. Funny. Intelligent. Beautiful. Loved. Loving.

These are just a few of the words I can used to describe Lauren.

I think for the rest of my life, I will not understand why she was chosen.

Last March, my dear niece was diagnosed with colon cancer. This is extremely rare in someone so young. In fact, doctors don’t start recommending a colonoscopy until you hit your 50′s. Yet, at 17…why?

At first we were very optimistic. The doctor seemed confident this could be treated and beaten. After all, colon cancer is very common with lots of treatment options.

Radiation. Chemotherapy. Surgery (which failed). More intense Chemotherapy. Surgery (round 2 – also failed). In between, some alternative treatments and remedies suggested my so many friends.

Well, what we didn’t know was that colon cancer in this age bracket is extremely aggressive. Her Oncologist had personally treated 4 cases before this and confirmed that each one was just as aggressive as hers.

We watched her wither away. Here is a picture from May 08, about 2 months after being diagnosed:

This is after she started radiation. Already losing weight, but still vibrant, if not a little tired. This picture was taken at a fund raiser held by the town (friends of the family) to help raise money to offset some of the astronomical costs being incurred.

It was a fun evening. We all still had much hope that we would beat this ugly disease.

This photo was taken in September – Laurens 18th birthday. Her energy was pretty much gone. At this point she was still undergoing the aggressive chemo treatments in preparation for surgery #2.  Around her are her little sister (front, on the right) and some of her cousins.

Aside from being tired, in pain and a little cranky, Lauren was still focused on her future and looking forward to getting all of this out of the way so she could get on with her life.

Not long after this photo was her second surgery. And this was the time we started to realize that she may not recover…

We took her to Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. She had to be there by 5:30 am. This surgery was scheduled to be 10 to 12 hours.

After she was admitted, we all settled in for the long day ahead – my sister and her husband, my other sister and her husband and me.

Two hours later, the doctor came out to talk to us. Two hours – we knew it wasn’t going to be good news. It wasn’t. He basically told us there was nothing they could do. The cancer had spread so much throughout her stomach and intestines that is was like a brick. Trying to remove it would have most likely killed her on the table. So they closed her up.

So now, after 2 failed surgery’s, Lauren was left with some massive scars, as well as a tube coming out of her stomach. With blocked intestines, she couldn’t go to the bathroom, so this was needed to get the waste out of her system.

She also could not keep down solid foods. She tried like crazy though. She loved good foods so she would eat, only to vomit all of it back up (there was no place for it to go…). That didn’t deter her – she kept on eating.

Now, this was one tough kid. Through all of this, she would still tell you exactly what she thought whether you liked it or not. She had a sarcastic wit that seems to run in my family.

What really impressed me about her was her drive, and her hope. This kid never was much of a television watcher and in all the months she spent in bed, I NEVER saw her television on. I would sit in the hospital with her for hours. No T.V. She would actually get annoyed if anyone else tried to watch it. She would lie there thinking if she was by herself – talking if there were others in the room.

And she studied. When she was diagnosed, she was a junior in High School. It bugged her to no end that she couldn’t go back. So with the help of her MANY friends as well as teachers and staff at her school, they helped her keep up with her classes. She did so well in fact, that this past November, she earned enough credits to graduate.  Take a look:

You can’t see Lauren because she’s surrounded by friends and staff from her high school. This was a special graduation ceremony that was arranged by the New Milford High School in New Jersey. Lauren was moved to tears…

That’s Lauren showing off her diploma with mom and dad (my sister Sheri and her husband Steve). She was very happy that day and I was honored to be a part of it with my wife.

Not resting on her laurels or letting her disease get the best of her, she also worked on her college applications and her essays. She wanted to be a nurse. Her experience made her want to help others.

She was accepted at the Holy Name Hospital Nursing Program. She was very proud (we all were). Even when she could hardly stay awake, whenever someone would visit her, she would say “I got accepted!” with a huge smile on her face. It was such a joy for her.

Friends – what can I say, Lauren has such an amazing group of friends. EVERY time I went to the hospital there was at least one friend there to visit. Usually a group of friends. They were all very dedicated to her and she to them.  Here’s an example of what they did for her:

If you can’t make that out, the picture is of her class spelling out 09, her gradutation year. They all wrote well wishes as well.

Then there’s Ricardo. Here’s a kid who was so dedicated…they were just a typical teen-aged couple. They started “dating” when they were 14. At 16 or so, he moved about an hour away. They were both devastated, but maintained a “long distance” relationship for a while.

When he found out about her cancer, he would come and visit every chance he got. This past couple of months, he started college, was working and still would come and visit. He would sit next to her bed and hold her hand. When she was able to go home for a while, he would lie next to her and stroke her cheek. He would tell her how beautiful she was. He wrote her letters.

When he couldn’t be there, they would constantly talk on the phone and send text messages.

The night Lauren passed, even though it was 3 in the morning, he insisted on coming to the hospital. I picked him up because he had a car accident the day before (not hurt, thank goodness). We all sat in the hospital room with Lauren, not wanting to leave. Leaving would make this all too real.

Laurens death was heart breaking. But at the same time a relief. Her pain had gotten very bad over the last several weeks. Vomitting was common – and also painful. In her final week, her medication was so much that she would hardly wake up.

My sister took comfort in knowing that Lauren was no longer scared. She often talked of seeing Nanny (my mother, who passed 18 months ago from lung cancer), smiling. Sitting on the edge of her bed, or looking out the window. We all take comfort in knowing my mother was there to help Lauren in her transition.

She is no longer suffering.

She will be sorely missed by so many.

I’ve been around this Internet Marketing niche for quite a while now, and I participate in a few forums. Every now and again, someone who is obviously new to the market and trying to get opinions or recommendations about a product or coaching program will ask,”Hey – how good is XYZ…?”

Legitimate question. It’s obvious that you have someone doing their due diligence BEFORE buying into a product or program.

What I really like are those that answer like this:

“Don’t waste your money. You can get all the information you want for free on the internet or in this forum.”

There’s an old saying… “Knowledge is power”. 

That’s only half right though. Knowledge itself is useless unless applied. So APPLIED knowledge is power.

So telling someone who’s looking for a way to succeed that they can find all the info they want for free is only giving them potential access to the power.

There’s all kinds of value out there. Money is surely value. But so is time.

So let’s say you are considering joining a coaching program that costs $997 and you ask about whether it’s worth the money. Then someone answers “Ah, you can find all of the info in that coaching program for free all over the internet”.

That answer may be true, but then you need to ask yourself a few questions too:

  • What is your time worth?
  • Do you know how to apply the information you’re finding for free?
  • Do you know what your best “method” is for achieving your goals? Surely there are lot’s of methods…
  • Can you constantly motivate yourself to move forward – especially when you have setbacks and failures? You can bet your bottom dollar you’ll have both.

Don’t be afraid to spend money (when you have it) on speeding up your education. It’s an investment in your future. Just be sure to research your potential investment as thoroughly – and objectively – as you can.

Even if you don’t have money to spend at will, there’s other things you can do.

Bartering is alive and well on the internet. Several years back, when I was fully five figures in debt, I decided to teach myself a few things…web hosting, script installations and general webmaster duties. Then when I saw something I thought would do me good, I contacted the product owner and suggested trading their product for my time.

While this didn’t work 100% of the time (naturally), it worked more than it didn’t. Subsequently, it helped speed up my own on line education significantly…and the money came faster.

We are now living in a customer service oriented world, yet many internet business providers fail to capitalize on this very important basic fact. Yes, I said capitalize because when you give a customer what he or she wants or asks for and then fail to follow up you are potentially leaving big money on the table. Not following up is actually a disservice and does not provide any customer service at all! How about that well known fact that  you can’t please all the people all the time. Conversely, the prudent move is to always try to please all the people all the time because its good business and makes money!
 
 
The majority of us will mail out to our full list whatever product or service we have and wait and see what happens then say well that’s that and as a general rule move on to something else. What if you provide the specific product being promoted on this first run full list mailing wait a few days and put a slight twist or heighten a sense of urgency for the product. Maybe change the general pitch or expand the benefits and send it again. Then, without being intrusive or overly pushy you ask what they thought or what they would like to see and send it out again. Then do another subscriber list follow up on that third mailing or a quick survey and so on thus continually putting the product in front of them for consideration. This is not as time consuming as you may think and it really works. Completing this process for each new product or service offering is well worth the minimal time investment devoted as I will soon be showing you.
 
 
The most important cold hard facts to remember are these: Your subscribers and clients might not even open the email the first time it is received or they don’t find it important or interesting enough or they don’t have time to read the damn thing due to a busy schedule and so on and so on. We have all been in these “not willing to” type positions so why act as if they don’t exist by only sending something out one time without a follow up to acquire more buyers and interest. These situations are very real, they do exist and this does not even consider the person that just won’t buy the first time or even the second time he is presented with an opportunity. Well, again what about the third time! We did not even try for the second run let alone a third. When shown to me this is where I began to see the logic and validity of follow ups or lack thereof in my case when I was not following up. 
 
 
There is an art to this type of follow up marketing and most people need some form of help to fully understand how to accomplish a campaign of this sort without irritating their current subscribers or members. I know for a fact I was not willing to potentially compromise my existing subscriber lists by providing a sheer nuisance of repetitive emails on the same topic.
 
 
That was the case until I was actually shown how to operate an automated system of doing follow ups that genuinly worked. It has made me more money by distributing and re-distributing the same product while simultaneously portraying me as a customer service KING to my members, clients  and subscribers. This is exactly the type of information I would enjoy sharing with you. I want everyone to prosper if they have worthy/honest ideas and products along with an established mailing list. You can decide for yourself. Is your email list not only synonymous with customer service or is it actually the natural pathway to increased sales and service as a whole? 

 
When following up properly your subscribers do not become annoyed. In most cases quite the contrary occurs and they will become somewhat impressed by your personalized involvement and general overall concerns regarding their success. Let them see what you have as often as possible and then listen to what they have to say. The majority will appreciate your efforts and in turn you will be making more money by presenting the same product effectively with minimal additional effort. 
 
 
Good luck on all your endeavors and remember the customer is always right, unless proven wrong, so give him as many opportunities to let you know that as possible. This yields you an opportunity to provide something such as an affiliate product to them or another one of your products as a potential solution in fulfilling their specific needs. At the very least you will be giving them the satisfaction of venting, being heard and developing a high confidence level in receiving a reply from you which is what builds long lasting business relationships.
